NUS is collaborating with the People’s Government of Guangzhou Municipality and the Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City Administration Committee(GKC)to establish the NUS Guangzhou Research Translation and Innovation Institute(NUSGRTII)in Guangzhou,China.This is NUS’third overseas research institute,after the NUS(Suzhou)Research Institute and the Tianjin University-NUS Joint Institute in Fuzhou.Located within Ascendas OneHub Guangzhou Knowledge City,and funded by the Guangzhou governments with support from local industry partners,the Institute leverages the strengths of the three parties to support the technology needs of Guangzhou city and China’s Greater Bay Area initiative.NUSGRTII will collaborate in areas such as sustainable cities,smart societies,advanced manufacturing,infocomm technology and artificial intelligence(AI),and it is expected to be operational by the second half of 2020.Professor Freddy Boey,NUS Deputy President(Innovation&Enterprise),Mr Chen Zhiying,Member of Standing Committee of CPC Guangzhou Committee and Executive Vice Mayor of Guangzhou,and Mr Chen Yong,Director-General,The People’s Government of Huangpu District,Guangzhou and Standing Deputy Director,Administrative Committee of Guangzhou Development District,signed acollaboration framework agreement on 18 November during the 10th Singapore-Guangdong Collaboration Council meeting in Guangzhou. 查看详细>>

Technological advancements like Artificial Intelligence(AI)have significantly transformed and impacted our lives in the digital age.Innovfest Unbound,the anchor event of the Smart Nations Innovation Week,held at Marina Bay Sands on 27 and 28 June,offered aplatform for exploring Asian opportunities and collaboration,and also unveiled more groundbreaking developments for making headway in the digital economy.Organised by NUS Enterprise and Unbound in partnership with the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore,the annual festival,now in its fifth year,attracted more than 18,000 entrepreneurs,investors,corporates and technology start-ups from over 100 countries.Speaking at the opening ceremony,Mr SIswaran,Minister for Communication and Information and Minister-in-Charge of Trade Relations,detailed how Singapore has made itself future-ready for the digital economy by investing in digital infrastructure like 5G,educating citizens and implementing legal frameworks that protect users without stifling innovation. 查看详细>>

NUS and global technology leader Cisco signed aMemorandum of Understanding on 25 June with the aim to boost Singapore’s knowledge-based innovation-driven digital economy.The two organisations will collaborate on innovation and research in key emerging technologies such as data analytics,Internet of Things(IoT),automation,cybersecurity,artificial intelligence(AI),machine learning and software defined networking.“Global digital transformation is continually transforming all aspects of our lives and presents aplethora of opportunities—and NUS is ready to seize these opportunities through our digital innovation activities.This collaborative partnership with Cisco symbolises NUS’deep commitment to translational research and co-creation of new knowledge in areas of strategic importance that will not only improve the way we live,work and play,but also propel Singapore’s position as atrue Smart Nation globally,”said NUS Deputy President for Research and Technology Professor Chen Tsuhan.The collaboration will facilitate the exchange of scientific,academic and technical knowledge between NUS and Cisco,and drive sponsored chairs and joint research projects focusing on key areas and sectors such as healthcare,manufacturing,customer experience and Smart Nation.Additionally,the NUS Kent Ridge campus will be used as aliving laboratory for the co-creation,exploration and evaluation of innovative ideas,technology and scenarios in real-life use cases. 查看详细>>

Yale-NUS College(Yale-NUS)and NUS Computing have jointly announced anew concurrent degree programme designed for liberal arts students planning to pursue careers in computing.The five-year Concurrent Degree Programme in Computing,announced on 14 February,will see students graduate with two degrees—a Bachelor of Arts(Honours)or Bachelor of Science(Honours)degree from Yale-NUS,conferred by NUS,and an NUS Master of Computing degree.The programme will shape the next generation of innovative and effective computing professionals who are able to tackle complex computing problems within aglobal context.Yale-NUS students can indicate their interest in the programme at the end of their second year,working towards eligibility requirements and an application in their third year.Successful applicants will formally enrol in their fourth year,completing their capstone project in their undergraduate major at Yale-NUS while taking courses at NUS Computing.The fifth year of the programme will be conducted at NUS Computing,where students will take required and elective courses either in the Computer Science specialisation,which offers exposure to areas such as machine learning,computational biology and media processing,or the Information System specialisation,which focuses on digital transformation and innovation.They will also complete aMaster’s degree dissertation.“Graduates from this programme will have abroad academic and intellectual background from the liberal arts and sciences curriculum,coupled with creative problem solving skills using computing technology,which will enable them to thrive in the fast changing technology landscape,”said Yale-NUS Executive Vice President(Academic Affairs)Professor Joanne Roberts.“As societies become increasingly digitalised and data reliant,competency in computing will inevitably become invaluable to all fields of study and profession,”said Associate Professor Chin Wei Ngan,NUS Computing Vice Dean for Graduate Studies.The Concurrent Degree Programme in Computing will begin in August 2020,and admissions will start in August this year.The Joint Admissions Committee,comprising Yale-NUS and NUS Computing faculty members,will assess applicants based on their computing and IT skills,as well as their academic,professional,leadership,communication and teamwork abilities. 查看详细>>

US has launched anew$12 million centre to carry out cutting-edge research aimed at managing the fundamental trade-off between the usefulness of accessible information and the risk of privacy breaches.Funded by the National Research Foundation Singapore,the NUS Centre for Research in Privacy Technologies(N-CRiPT)will design and develop privacy-preserving technologies to protect the privacy of individuals and organisations in aholistic manner throughout the data life cycle,from collection and curation to processing and sharing.Speaking at the launch of the Centre on 15 January,Mr Yeong Zee Kin,Assistant Chief Executive(Data Innovation and Protection),Infocomm Media Development Authority of Singapore and Deputy Commissioner,Personal Data Protection Commission,reiterated the common expression that“data is the new oil”.“We are not turning back the clock.We will not be going back to the days when we used less data.We will not be going back to the days when we used less technology.The volume of data will continue to grow.The volume of data that we store will continue to grow.So how best do we find anew way forward to safeguard the data that we have and to also ensure that we get the best value out of the data that we are sitting on?”said Mr Yeong,adding that from this perspective,the work being done at N-CRiPT is going to be very important. 查看详细>>

NUS has established anew scholarship to groom outstanding students who aspire to be entrepreneurs and are keen on developing their entrepreneurial skills.The scholarship boosts NUS’efforts in developing more young entrepreneurial leaders and the entrepreneurial community on campus.Dr Stephen Riady,Executive Chairman of OUE Limited and philanthropist,is the inaugural benefactor supporting this initiative,with awards made possible through his gift to be known as The Stephen Riady Young Entrepreneur Scholarship.The scholarship will cover students’tuition fees and living allowances for four years of study.Students will receive mentorship and guidance from NUS Enterprise—the entrepreneurial arm of NUS—and be given the chance to participate in the exciting NUS Overseas Colleges Programme,where they will study in prestigious partner universities and undergo start-up internships in entrepreneurial hotspots around the world to gain international exposure and valuable hands-on experience.The scholarship also offers those keen on starting anew business venture when they graduate an opportunity to apply for seed funding of up to$50,000.In 10 years,as many as 50 start-ups are expected—contributing to the vibrant local entrepreneurial eco-system in Singapore,and helping to advance economic and social development in the country and the region.Open to freshmen from all disciplines,the scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated academic excellence,outstanding leadership qualities and astrong interest in creating start-up companies.Commenting on the significance of the initiative,Dr Riady said,“Entrepreneurs are drivers of innovation,and they will play an increasingly significant role in Singapore’s economic progress,especially in the digital age.I am therefore pleased to support NUS with this gift,which recognises the challenges and impact of the entrepreneurial spirit,and also underscores my commitment to enable young entrepreneurial talent to develop their fullest potential.It is my hope that this new scholarship could cultivate the next wave of entrepreneurs who can help Singapore to stay ahead amid challenging times.”NUS President Professor Tan Eng Chye said that the University is deeply grateful to Dr Riady for his generous gift and heartened that he shares NUS’vision to promote entrepreneurship and innovation among undergraduates.“The Stephen Riady Young Entrepreneur Scholarship encourages our bright students to think big and pursue their entrepreneurship ambitions,and it also resonates with our national efforts to grow the next generation of local champions.”He added,“Our new scholarship dedicated towards nurturing entrepreneurial talents for Singapore will accelerate NUS’continuous efforts in developing aconducive and vibrant ecosystem that nurtures entrepreneurs and start-ups capable of developing and deploying powerful solutions to benefit businesses and communities in Singapore and beyond.We hope more donors will come forward to support us in this meaningful cause.” 查看详细>>

Providing excellent customer care is atop priority for any business in the service industry.Three NUS students have therefore founded Geboto—a chatbot solutions provider—to help these businesses step up their customer engagement game.Geboto is the brainchild of recent NUS graduates Joel Foo from NUS Statistics and Johnervan Lee from NUS Mechanical Engineering,as well as undergraduate Chia Wei Kang from NUS Computer Science.The idea was conceived during Joel and Johnervan’s stint at the NUS Overseas College Israel.“With the rise of artificial intelligence,we foresee future business-customer communication to involve little or no human intervention.There is huge potential in using chatbots to create amore personalised and engaging experience for customers,”explained Johnervan.The duo then roped in Wei Kang,who has expertise in software engineering,to co-develop achatbot aimed at offering an integrated platform for boutique hotels to better connect with their customers digitally.Geboto’s chatbot platform can be customised to the needs of different businesses beyond hotels and is integrated with social media platforms so that customers do not need to download any separate application.The team also designed abutton centric interface where users can be directed to their queries mostly by clicks to minimise language barriers between customers and the bot,an important feature for businesses that serve international clients,such as airlines and travel agencies. 查看详细>>
