Johns Hopkins University has created anew system for students, prospective students, parents, and others to submit requests for assistance with course registration, financial aid,and student accounts,an important first step as the university moves toward ashared student services organization. The new case management system—developed by University Information Systems as part of the Student Services Excellence Initiative—will make it easier for users to get the support they need quickly and easily.Rather than calling or emailing various offices or departments to ask questions or resolve issues, students can submit arequest. The system will significantly reduce the number of times astudent is referred to another office or staff member to receive support. It will also give staff amore comprehensive view of the needs of students and others requesting help, showing prior requests, the status of requests, and previous communications with the student."Along with my colleagues who lead registration, student accounts, and financial aid,I‘m excited about the launch of this new tool,"said Tanya Johnson, the university‘s inaugural director of Student Enrollment Customer Services."The tool offers digital record-keeping,centralized data management, and real-time updates for students and staff. The Hopkins community will appreciate how the system increases transparency and offers efficient resolution of case management through effective collaboration."Historically, information collected on student help requests has been difficult to track and nearly impossible to report on—information is stored in different locations that are not accessible across departments. The new system will promote the collection and safeguarding of important student data. The first wave of the rollout begins today, for students in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and Whiting School of Engineering, including Advanced Academic Programs and Engineering for Professionals.Degree-and certificate-seeking learners at all degree levels may use the tool, but those in non-credit programs should continue to work directly with their program contacts,as the tool does not currently support non-credit programs.AAP‘s summer programs are also not included.Current and prospective students, parents, and alumni can submit requests and inquiries by visiting the online case form.It can also be accessed on the Homewood University Registrar,Student Financial Services, and Student Accounts websites. The system will roll out across the university throughout the coming year.Details on exact launch dates will be shared at alater date;to stay informed, readers can subscribe to the SSEI newsletter. 查看详细>>

Johns Hopkins University‘s newly established Tenure Advisory Committee—a universitywide body that will advise President Ronald J.Daniels on the strength of tenure cases forwarded to him for consideration and will bring the university in line with how its peers address the tenure process—held its first meeting earlier this month.Daniels charged the 14-member TAC with fostering consistently high academic standards across the schools.Chaired by Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Sunil Kumar, the TAC will begin advising Daniels on all cases submitted to him for final approval by the board of trustees in February 2021."One of the most important academic decisions that we make as auniversity are the appointments and promotions of our faculty colleagues,"Daniels said."I know my part in the tenure process will benefit tremendously from the cross-divisional and diverse faculty perspectives represented on this committee."The TAC was created based on the recommendation of the Faculty Advisory Committee on Tenure,or FACT,which formed in April 2019 to assess the value of creating auniversity-level tenure committee and to make recommendations for its composition and procedures.FACT issued its final report in favor of forming the TAC in December 2019 after nine months of extensive research, consultation, deliberation, and revision. 查看详细>>

Johns Hopkins‘new Kessler Scholars Program supports first-generation students with academic and co-curricular opportunities encouraging acommitment to civic engagement Lubna Azmi has found herself repeatedly on the front lines of immigrant rights, community building, and civic engagement. As one of the founders of amutual aid organization in her hometown of Manassas,Virginia, the Johns Hopkins sophomore helps coordinate local volunteers, organizes direct financial assistance to those in need, and advocates for the development of youth programs throughout the city. She raised awareness of policies surrounding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program—commonly known as DACA—and coordinated protests outside the Supreme Court alongside Hoyas for Immigrant Rights. And as ahigh school student, she lobbied her school administration to provide resources for arecent influx of Central American immigrant students.According to Azmi, this work isn‘t achoice;it‘s acalling."I‘m aMuslim American woman. My parents are immigrants to this country.Because of that,my identity, how I‘ve grown up,has been politicized,"Azmi says."And that applies to so many other people in this country and around the world.I have to work toward aworld where there‘s acceptance and where there is care for people that are marginalized."Because of her dedication to social justice causes,Azmi was selected as one of 16 Kessler Scholars at Johns Hopkins,a new cohort of first-generation students chosen for their interest in the liberal arts and dedication to civic engagement. The Kessler Scholars program provides institutional support for first-generation students, connecting them with mentors, faculty members, and university staff who will help them become civic-minded leaders of the future.Students are selected for their interest in the humanities, dedication to civic engagement, and academic achievement. 查看详细>>

Understanding the way awave moves through granular materials—after an earthquake, for example—has vast implications for modern science. After all, scientists use stress wave propagation through granular materials to detect the magnitude of earthquakes, locate oil and gas reservoirs, design acoustic insulation, and develop materials for compacting powders.Using X-ray measurements and analyses,a team of researchers led by aJohns Hopkins mechanical engineering professor have shown that velocity scaling and dispersion in wave transmission is based on particle arrangements and chains of force between them, while reduction of wave intensity is caused mainly from particle arrangements alone. The research appeared yesterday in the online edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences."Our study provides abetter understanding of how the fine-scale structure of agranular material is related to the behavior of waves propagating through them,"said Ryan Hurley, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering."This knowledge is of fundamental importance in the study of seismic signals from landslides and earthquakes,in the nondestructive evaluation of soils in civil engineering, and in the fabrication of materials with desired wave properties in materials science."Hurley conceived of this line of research while apostdoc at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, collaborating with ateam that included physicist Eric Herbold. The experiments and analysis were later performed by Hurley and Whiting School postdoc Chongpu Zhai after Hurley moved to JHU,with experimental assistance and continued discussions with Herbold. 查看详细>>

Johns Hopkins President Ronald J.Daniels shared the following message with the university community today about the significant financial implications of the COVID-19 pandemic for JHU.Dear Members of the Johns Hopkins Community:In recent weeks,I have written to share updates with our community and to express my profound gratitude for your extraordinary response to COVID-19.I continue to be awestruck by our university‘s remarkable resourcefulness and resilience, its decency and aspiration, its humanity and excellence. As we look across the vast expanse of Johns Hopkins—in health care, research, education, and service—it is clear that our mission advances despite the very trying circumstances in which we are operating.Johns Hopkins has truly risen to this moment. This is rightfully apoint of shared pride for all of us.Yet our university is not immune to the very serious negative effects of COVID-19.Today,I write to speak frankly with you about the substantial financial challenges our university is confronting and the measures we are undertaking to meet them, including actions that will directly and significantly affect our employees. The context for this discussion is among the most daunting of our lifetime, given the devastating toll that COVID-19 is exacting on our nation and its citizens. As of this week, more than 40,000 people have died of the disease in the United States and many thousands more have been rendered gravely ill, some with long-term health effects.Over the past month alone, more than 22 million people across the country filed for unemployment compensation, including more than 300,000 people in Maryland.Government and industry leaders now predict levels of economic loss not seen since the Great Depression of almost acentury ago,and caution us to prepare for years of extended recovery. 查看详细>>
