Sustainable speed The pods–made from fiberglass and carbon fibres–will travel in near-vacuum tubes designed to magnetically levitate and glide down the track, without the slowing effects of friction. The system is engineered to reduce aerodynamic drag and increase fuel efficiency, thus creating an environmentally friendlier alternative to other modes of transport.According to Government statistics, transport produced almost aquarter of the UK’s total greenhouse gas emissions in 2020.However,there is still increasing demand for faster, more efficient and affordable transport options, experts say.HYPED Edinburgh’s student team–HYPED–is part of an international movement working to bring Hyperloop technology closer to reality.Following the construction of its first prototype pod in 2017,the team has grown into athriving and diverse society of around 130 students from across the University. It provides atesting ground for students to tackle the technical challenges of building afunctioning Hyperloop pod from scratch, including this year’s entry which the team named‘Pod Ness’.International focus This year HYPED hosted European Hyperloop Week–welcoming student teams from 24 countries including Norway,Switzerland,Spain,Holland,Turkey and India. The annual gathering brings student engineers, computer scientists, physicists and project managers together to test, compete, network and share ideas and about Hyperloop.Demos Demonstration day saw the teams present their latest prototypes and test them on individually built tracks on the University’s King’s Buildings campus.Awards were presented for the best pod and specific elements including:mechanics, traction, sensing, controls and electrical systems. The week concluded with apublic outreach day in the centre of Edinburgh where all the teams talked to visitors about the potential of Hyperloop and the benefits of studying STEM subjects. 查看详细>>

Inward investment The six-month programme will help emerging companies with high growth potential to develop their initiatives and bring investment and jobs to Edinburgh and the city region. To qualify, participating companies must use AI for wider societal benefit and deliver solutions in core areas such as health, social care and the environment.Participants benefit from afull package of support focused on building connections, leadership mentoring and support with product development to help transform their AI businesses into world-leading companies.2022/2023 cohort Among the 12 successful companies are EtiqAI–a female-founded company whose technology is designed to increase transparency and minimise any unintended bias within AI algorithms. Also included is Edinburgh-headquartered Vahanomy, which is driving the rollout of charging stations for electric vehicles, and US start-up MindTrace, which was first attracted to Scotland by the University’s expertise in AI research and talent development. The company uses AI and imaging to enhance positive outcomes in brain surgery.Entrepreneurial advisor This year’s AI Accelerator programme features the appointment of John Brodie to the role of Entrepreneur in Residence.John was the co-founder of data analytics consultancy Aquila Insight, which grew to become ahighly successful company, and was sold in 2017.He is now an active advisor and investor within the Scottish start-up community and has been named as one of Data IQ’s 100 Most Influential People in Data.Previous success Edinburgh’s AI Accelerator has supported companies and helped them attract more than£10m in grants and investment over the past year. The programme will be delivered both digitally and in-person by the Bayes Centre and Edinburgh Innovations–the University’s commercialisation service–on behalf of its Data-Driven Innovation hubs. The programme has also partnered with global strategic design consultancy NileHQ,and is supported by Huawei UK and the Edinburgh Earth Initiative. 查看详细>>

Informing decisions Researchers from the University of Edinburgh and 13 other countries combined data from 10,369 patients with suspected acute heart failure to develop atool–called CoDE-HF–to inform clinicians’decisions.CoDE-HF uses AI to combine routinely collected patient information with results from ablood test for the heart protein NT-proBNP to produce an estimate of whether they suffered heart failure. The current recommended diagnosis method is to test to see if levels of NT-proBNP are below acertain cut-off value, but this is not widely used as levels can vary depending on an individual’s age, weight and other health conditions. As well as spotting acute heart failure more accurately than heart protein blood tests on their own,CoDE-HF was especially precise in difficult to diagnose patient groups–such as older people and those with pre-existing medical conditions.Personalized care The team are currently conducting further studies to understand how this decision-support tool will work in the hospital environment and influence patient outcomes. The research was funded by the British Heart Foundation and the findings have been published in The BMJ. 查看详细>>

A simple blood test could be used in the future to predict the health and productivity of dairy cows, research shows.Testing female calves for molecules in the blood–called microRNAs–could help predict their likelihood of developing disease, scientists say.Scientists have found that the blood levels of certain microRNAs change dramatically during the early life of cows.Health prediction Some of these blood molecules are associated with diseases such as lameness and mastitis–inflammation of the udders–as well as with milk production.Researchers at the Roslin Institute and Scotland’s Rural College(SRUC),who carried out the study, say aprocedure to identify calves that are likely to have problems later in life would benefit the dairy industry and improve animal welfare.Improving welfare Levels of microRNA can be easily analysed in lab tests, and used to assess changes in tissue function. This approach is already being applied to disease diagnosis in humans. In UK dairy herds,up to one-third of cows are affected by disease or reproductive failure. This incurs costs to farmers. The research was published in Scientific Reports. 查看详细>>
