The ongoing collaboration between The University of Manchester’s graphene scientists and Northern England-based outdoor sports brand inov-8 has been awarded as an‘outstanding’example of innovation and wealth creation in the UK by Innovate UK.The partnership, which has seen the launch of and subsequent development of the high-performance graphene-enhanced footwear,is now in the spotlight for its success in taking fundamental research to asuccessful global hit product.Officially launched in 2018,the collaborative partners announced that they had been able to develop agraphene-enhanced rubber through aresearch project which began behind the scenes in 2016.They developed G-GRIP rubber outsoles for running, hiking and fitness shoes that in testing outlasted 1,000 miles, are scientifically proven to be 50%harder wearing, and deliver the world’s toughest grip.Subsequently, graphene was infused into the midsole foam as well,to provide superior and long-lasting energy return that supercharges feet. The G-FLY foam midsole was launched in 2021.Aravind Vijayaraghavan,Professor of Nanomaterials at The University of Manchester, said:“This partnership is an excellent example of how auniversity research group and aSME can collaborate closely to take cutting edge technology from lab to market at arapid pace.It demonstrates the significant benefits that graphene can bring to everyday products and impact our daily lives.”Now Innovate UK has honoured the recently completed Knowledge Transfer Partnership between the two organisations with the highest possible grade of‘Outstanding’.The project has set the bar high, resulting in not only aworld-leading product range, but also ahighly effective partnership that is boosting the University’s commercial reputation–and that of afellow northern brand. 查看详细>>

The University of Manchester has teamed up with Greater Manchester Police(GMP)to fund aseries of thought-provoking interactive theatre performances and workshops led by Manchester-based charity,Odd Arts, which engage with students to challenge and explore issues of consent and sexual assaults. The workshops aim to encourage students to consider when and how they can intervene when they experience incidents of sexual misconduct within their own lives and educate them on issues of consent,by having actors perform aseries of hard-hitting and sometimes uncomfortable scenarios and giving the audience the chance to stop the performance to discuss how they would react in the situation. The initiative is part of an ongoing commitment to tackle incidents of sexual assaults and rape,by increasing confidence in reporting and providing victims‘appropriate support from specially trained police officers,as well as raising awareness of what constitutes rape and sexual assault. 查看详细>>

First Graphene Ltd has signed an exclusive worldwide licensing agreement with The University of Manchester to develop graphene-hybrid materials for use in supercapacitors. The licencing agreement is for patented technology for the manufacture of metal oxide decorated graphene materials, using aproprietary electrochemical process. The graphene-hybrid materials will have the potential to create anew generation of supercapacitors, for use in applications ranging from electric vehicles to elevators and cranes.Supercapacitors offer high power-density energy storage, with the possibility of multiple charge/discharge cycles and short charging times. The market for supercapacitor devices is forecast to grow at 20%per year to approximately$2.1 billion by 2022.However,growth maybe limited by the availability of suitable materials.Supercapacitors typically use microporous carbon nanomaterials, which have agravimetric capacitance between 50 and 150 Farads/g.Research carried out by The University of Manchester shows that high capacitance materials incorporating graphene are capable of reaching up to 500 Farads/g.This will significantly increase the operational performance of supercapacitors in awide range of applications,as well as increasing the available supply of materials. 查看详细>>
