The program is open to individuals with one year or more of full-time healthcare management or healthcare-related professional experience, and who are employed full-time currently in a U.S. healthcare-related position.

As marketplace demand for skilled medical and health service managers grows strongly throughout the U.S., NYU Wagner is introducing an Online Master of Health Administration (MHA) degree program, Sherry Glied, the school’s dean, announced today.

The highly ranked Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University is accepting applications for admission to the program. The priority application deadline for the program’s inaugural 2019 spring semester is October 5.

The part-time Online MHA degree program is open to individuals who have at least one year of full-time healthcare management or healthcare-related professional experience, and who are employed full-time currently in the field in a U.S. healthcare-related position.

The new online opportunity builds upon NYU Wagner’s on-campus healthcare management focused program, ranked No. 1 in Health Policy & Management by US News and World Report in 2018 among all graduate schools of public affairs. The Online MHA option provides a flexible means to advanced skills, knowledge, and experience necessary to succeed in healthcare management. Students with an MHA go on to careers in healthcare systems and hospitals, physicians’ offices, nursing homes, home healthcare organizations, pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms, and many other contexts across the healthcare sector.

The U.S. Department of Labor predicts that employment of medical and health services managers will grow by 20 percent, or 72,100, by 2026 from the 2016 employment levels.

“The Online MHA program is our next frontier in preparing future public service leaders to give their careers traction and make a difference for the social good,” said Glied. “We are building on our strong reputation in healthcare management education, and bringing it to the online space to provide healthcare practitioners the opportunity to advance their skills and careers in an accessible manner."

Glied, a professor of public service, will be among the highly accomplished NYU Wagner faculty teaching online courses and additionally giving personalized instruction and other guidance on leveraging the school’s career services and other offerings. Before becoming the dean, Glied served as chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management at Columbia University. She was assistant secretary for planning and evaluation at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and senior economist for health care and labor market policy on the President’s Council of Economic Advisers under Presidents Bush and Clinton (1992-93).

Additional faculty in the MHA program bring diverse and distinguished professional backgrounds and teaching credentials — for example, as managers of the most prestigious hospitals and healthcare systems in the country, and consultants and advisers on major U.S. healthcare initiatives.

Thomas D’Aunno, PhD, professor of management, is the director of the school’s Master of Health Administration degree program.

“The market for MHA graduates, and healthcare managers broadly, is quite strong,” D’Aunno explained. “Our online approach meets the needs of working professionals. It will enable them to gain essential knowledge and skills required for senior managerial work and leadership roles. As a school at the leading edge of preparing students for careers in healthcare management, this is really an exciting time.”
