The UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training in Digital Healthcare will train anew generation of PhD-level researchers,including clinical PhD fellows and allied healthcare professionals,to develop AI systems that address healthcare challenges with afocus on patient needs and societal values.Centre Director and Principal Investigator Professor Aldo Faisal,from the Departments of Computing and Bioengineering,said:“This is an incredible opportunity for the UK and NHS,and one that demonstrates Imperial College London’s thriving digital healthcare ecosystem."The Centre will allow us to develop anew generation of more than 120 future leaders who we will recruit over the next five years.During their PhD studies they develop patient-ready solutions that align with patient needs.Our aim is to help transform the healthcare ecosystem and help reduce the unmet demand for health and care.“Designing patient-ready AI requires not only state of the art research in AI and healthcare,but also understanding the regulatory,legal,ethical,and human constraints that are specific to health and care.This means it is extremely challenging to develop and deploy practical AI systems.We have created over the past five years an ecosystem of experts,institutions,stakeholders,data,and networks so thatour new UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training in Digital Healthcare is ready to face this challenge head on.” 查看详细>>

The University of Hong Kong(HKU)has partnered with Dr Wong How Man,a world-renowned explorer and founder of the China Exploration and Research Society(CERS),to establish the"Wong How Man Centre for Exploration"(the Centre)at the University of Hong Kong.Being the first among local universities,the Centre is aone-of-its-kind institute dedicated at nourishing students‘curiosity,courage and creativity through exploration.Both HKU and the Centre share the ambition of enhancing students‘understanding of the real world and encouraging them to engage in diverse research and learning experiences through the spirit of exploration.Throughout the academic year,the Centre will organize aseries of experiential exploratory activities and public lectures for HKU students.Additionally,the Centre will arrange field visits to centres and conservation project sites of CERS throughout Asia.On October 4,Dr Wong How Man delivered the inaugural public lecture on campus,titled"Exploration&Education:From 20th to 21st Century”.Dr Wong recounted his 50-year exploration journey,including leading multiple expeditions to China‘s border regions and neighboring areas,as well as terrestrial,maritime,and cave exploration experiences in China and Southeast Asia.The lecture was well-received by hundreds of students and staff.“The exploration programmes and experience offered by the Centre will sow the seeds of curiosity and spirit of exploration among our students,and offer them new perspectives to look at the world”,says Professor Xiang Zhang,HKU President and Vice-Chancellor.“Show me athree-year old child and Ishow you an explorer”,said Dr Wong,who believes that each individual should stay as curious as achild.In 2002,Time Magazine selected Dr Wong How Man as one of the"25 Asian Heroes."Recognized as China‘s most accomplished contemporary explorer,he has previously worked for National Geographic Magazine and led numerous large-scale exploration projects,including one that successfully located the source of the Yangtze River,that have received significant international media coverage. 查看详细>>

8月24日,清华大学东南亚中心(TSEA)联合印尼国家研究创新署(BRIN)共同举办中国-印尼数字化人才培养与可持续发展论坛。此次论坛汇聚来自中国和印度尼西亚两国政府部门、学术界、产业界的代表,就数字化人才培养体系、数字化转型与人工智能治理等议题开展交流并探讨合作前景,以期共同推动可持续发展目标的实现,携手共创美好未来。清华大学人工智能国际治理研究院(I-AIIG)参与论坛组织,并承办“人工智能治理与以人为本的数字生态系统”分论坛。清华大学校长王希勤、印尼经济统筹部部长艾尔兰加·哈塔托(Airlangga Hartarto)应邀致辞。清华大学文科资深教授、I-AIIG院长薛澜、印尼科学院院长沙特利约·索曼特里·布罗佐内戈罗(SatryoS.Brodjonegoro)、印尼国家信息和通信技术委员会执行主任伊尔哈姆·阿克巴·哈比比(Ilham Akbar Habibie)作主旨发言。I-AIIG副院长肖茜主持主论坛。王希勤在视频致辞中表示,清华大学成立了人工智能国际治理研究院和东南亚中心等机构,致力于加强相关领域的理论研究、政策研究与交流合作。此次论坛的举办恰逢其时,希望双方能够通过此次论坛,深入探讨数字化人才培养、数字化转型与人工智能治理等重要问题,进一步加强在上述领域的交流与合作。艾尔兰加·哈塔托在致辞中表示,习近平主席提出的全球发展倡议代表了发展中国家加快疫情复苏的期望,呼吁国际社会加强国际发展合作,加快落实联合国2030年可持续发展议程,有助于促进全球发展。他指出,数字经济为印尼的经济增长和人民生活水平的提高提供了新的机遇,印尼经济统筹部制定了一个国家数字经济框架,旨在促进合作,催生协同效应,从而进一步推动印尼数字经济的增长。薛澜以“数字经济背景下的跨境数据流动问题”为题作主旨发言,他表示,当前全球数字经济增长迅猛,数字经济越来越成为国家经济的重要组成部分,而数据是数字经济的核心要素,引领新一轮经济全球化特别是数字经济全球化的关键在于促进数据要素在全球范围内的有效流动。薛澜建议,在国际层面,应加快推进数据跨境流动国际治理合作进程,各国政府应在完善国内数据治理规则的基础上,共同营造开放有序的跨境数据流动环境,确保数据流动的立法水平接轨国际标准。在国内层面,各国应提升其数据跨境流动技术治理水平,准确研判数据跨境流动带来的综合影响。清华大学国际处处长郦金梁在总结致辞中表示,数字经济作为后疫情时期世界经济增长的新动力,作用更加重要。中印尼两国均将数字转型纳入政策议程,旨在创造一个更具包容性的全球经济,并改革全球数据治理。他对对话成功表示祝贺,同时希望此次对话可以作为一个起点,促进中国、印度尼西亚乃至其他国家之间的更多创新与合作,从而建立一个更有韧性和可持续的数字生态系统。本次论坛还下设两个分论坛,分别围绕“人工智能治理与以人为本的数字生态系统”“十万数字人才及数字生态”两个主题展开讨论。 查看详细>>

On Thursday 26 May Oxford University’s brand new£3.25m Zero-carbon Energy Research Oxford(ZERO)Institute and Energy Systems Accelerator pilot(Mini-TESA)opened their doors to showcase the range and depth of ambition in Oxford to drive forward the energy systems transition for the UK and globally.Attending the event were 200 stakeholders from across policy,energy and academic sectors including Barbara Hammond MBE(CEO of the Low Carbon Hub),Andrew Roper(Director of Distribution System Operations,SSEN),Councillor Liz Leffman(Leader of Oxfordshire County Council)and Nigel Tipple(Chief Executive,OxLEP,Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership).Mini-TESA,based at Osney Mead near Oxford train station,is aprogressive co-working space which began operating at the start of the year.It houses the University’s MSc in Energy Systems,hosts up to 100 workstations for Oxford University and external staff and is home to an ideas-exchange hub where different disciplines and organisations can develop radical thinking.By facilitating industry and academic collaboration across all energy vectors(electricity,heat and mobility),new approaches to an equitable energy transition can be accelerated and deployed at scale.This will drive innovation in low carbon technologies and services nationally and internationally,helping to ensure the UK meets its legally-binding carbon targets.Professor Nick Eyre,Director of the Centre for Research into Energy Demand Solutions and Co-Director of ZERO Institute,said:‘To stop climate change,we need to move away from fossil fuels by mid-century.This will require transformation in the ways we capture,convert,store and use energy.It’s an unprecedented challenge.’Professor Malcolm McCulloch,Head of Energy and Power Group,founder of YASA motors and Co-Director of ZERO Institute,said:‘This launch of both the ZERO Institute and of mini-TESA is an exciting milestone to realising the ambition of Oxford University to play its role in helping the global transition to azero-carbon energy future.The institute convenes an exceptional group of minds to address the problem and mini-TESA provides aplace to accelerate the translation to real world innovation.’Dr Andy Gilchrist,Low Carbon Energy Partnerships,University of Oxford,said:‘To deliver azero-carbon world,the way our energy system moves energy to and between all consumers will need to change radically.And to make this challenge even harder,our energy system must evolve extremely rapidly and without interrupting supply.It’s undoubtedly humanity’s biggest ever challenge.’Now operational,mini-TESA houses two University research groups,the Low Carbon Hub(a social enterprise),and ateam from Scottish and Southern Energy Networks(the local electricity distributor).It also has hot-desking spaces and is hosting large-scale‘SPRINTS’,where stakeholders can come together to focus minds,with the aim of identifying pathways to smooth the energy transition in an equitable manner.These SPRINTS will be aregular feature of ZERO Institute and mini-TESA,as importance of this deep and rapid approach to problem-solving has only intensified with the cost-of-living crisis amid the global instability caused by the war in Ukraine and the associated sanctions.Once the pilot has proved to be successful and further funding is secured,the full TESA will incorporate a10,000m2 international facility where up to 800 practitioners,stakeholders and academics can work and interact,maximising creativity.The full TESA is set to be net-carbon negative and located in the new Innovation District,that is regenerating the West End of Oxford.The ZERO Institute will build on the University’s extensive energy research activities,which span more than 20 departments and 200 researchers.It aims to establish Oxford as acentre of research excellence and thought leadership on aglobal and equitable zero-carbon transition and has secured a£3.25m investment from the University’s Strategic Research Fund(SRF). 查看详细>>

Korea’s first Apple Developer Academy held its first class online on March 14.The Apple Developer Academy is an education program for developers in the making.The nine-month course will be conducted online to start,with in-person classes at POSTECH at alater date.On the first day of classes,both the students and the mentors showed much enthusiasm and strong engagement.The Apple Developer Academy–designed to provide computer science education and startup opportunities to the aspiring entrepreneurs,developers,and designers–will run five days aweek for nine months.The curriculum covers arange of courses including Coding,Design,App Business&Marketing,Professional Skills and Process to deliver amulti-disciplinary framework to equip students with the skills and experience they need to bring their ideas to life.Apple Developer Academy and POSTECH selected 200 students across the country to participate in the free program.The class of 2022 are atalented group of students with much personality,passion,and potential.“We’re thrilled to partner with Pohang University of Science and Technology to open Korea’s first Apple Developer Academy,and to support Korea’s next generation of developers and entrepreneurs”said Gordon Shukwit,the director of Apple Developer Academy.“The App Store ecosystem is an engine for creativity and economic development,and we can’t wait to see how the 200 students in the first Academy class use their skills to build new businesses and create apps that change the world.”“I was thinking about my career path while pursuing my major in life sciences and became interested in Apple’s operating system iOS;but Inoticed abig gap between the classes offered at school and the actual development work,”explained Jikyung Kim,a student enrolled in the Apple Developer Academy.“Apple’s education curriculum is what Ineed but what Iam looking forward to is growing together through collaborating with other students from different backgrounds.”Inseop Kim,who worked as aguitarist and sound engineer,said that he joined the developer academy to find anew way to express through app development.“I got the courage to apply after seeing an interview of aparticipant at the developer academy in Brazil who was aband musician.”He added,“It is exciting that this program allows adiverse group of people to create synergy and new values with their own ideas.”“POSTECH is thrilled to safely hold the first class of Korea’s first Apple Developer Academy,despite an ongoing pandemic,in partnership with Apple,a leading global company,”remarked President Moo Hwan Kim of POSTECH.“We will do our best to support these 200 exceptional individuals–full of potential–in their course of learning over the nine months so that they can grow into leaders who can contribute to the advancement of their communities and the nation.”There are more than adozen Apple Developer Academy sites around the world,including Detroit(US)and Italy.The first of its kind in Korea has opened at POSTECH.On average,graduates from the Apple Developer Academies receive 3job offers after completing the course and have launched more than 1,500 apps in the App store and founded 160 new companies in total.Korea has athriving iOS app economy,which supports hundreds of thousands of jobs across the country.Launching an Apple Developer Academy builds on Apple’s partnership with Korea and is expected to create more jobs and startups across the country. 查看详细>>

UC Berkeley is partnering with UC San Francisco and Stanford University as founding scientific members of anew institute that aims to accelerate breakthroughs in complex diseases.The Arc Institute was officially launched today(Dec.15)with the goal of developing anew model for collaborative research that brings together world-class research with unconstrained funding to enable new discoveries that improve human health.The institute has raised more than$650 million from founding donors,including Patrick Collison,co-founder and CEO of Stripe,a financial services and software company,to fully support scientists and their research for renewable eight-year terms.Joining Collison are founding researchers Silvana Konermann,Stanford assistant professor of biochemistry,and Patrick Hsu,Berkeley assistant professor of bioengineering.All three were part of the team behind last year’s Fast Grants program,which,in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic,provided immediate funding to researchers with promising ideas. 查看详细>>
